Aim of the school and preliminary program

The School promotes deepening of biophysical topics selected in the area of contemporary research. The selected subjects will draw young researcher's attention on themes of frontier research which are considered of relevant scientific and educational impact. The School will be held in the magnificent Palazzo Loredan, in the historical centre of Venice, seat of the Istituto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti.

The School, in its sixth year of activity, will be on:
Biophysics of Sensory Transduction
and will deal with the following topics:

  1. Mechanotransduction
    • Cochlear mechanics and amplification
    • Mechanosensitive ion channels
    • Mathematical models of cochlear function
    • Calcium dynamics in hair cells
  2. Chemotransduction
    • Olfactory transduction in vertebrates
    • Receptors and transduction in taste
    • Electrophysiology of taste cells
    • Vomeronasal receptors
    • From Biology to an artificial nose
  3. Phototransduction in invertebrates
    • Light sensitive channels
    • Calcium signaling and light adaptation
    • Multimolecular signaling in photoreceptors
    • Extraocular photoreception
    • Photoreception in microorganisms
  4. Phototransduction in vertebrates
    • Calcium transport and phototrasduction
    • Cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels
    • Cone photoreception
