Advanced optical technology for deep functional imaging in the intact cerebral cortex.

CB:67831

We are currently opening one postdoctoral position centred on the development and application of innovative optical methodologies for the study of the brain functions.

Our aim is to build a novel two-photon super-resolution microscope which introduces an original adaptive optics architecture for imaging the function of deep cortical layers in vivo.

To this end we will also implement a novel form of super resolution technique, SW 2PE-STED, on this microscope.

The project is based on recent technical developments (Bianchini et al. PNAS 2012) and will be carried out in collaboration with the Department of Neuroscience and Brain Technologies and the Nanophysics Facility at IIT. Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.

The ultimate goal is to obtain aberration-free and ultra-deep super-resolution imaging in the mouse cortex.

Applicants should have a sound background in optics, with specific focus on applied optics for neuroscience applications, be significantly autonomous and keen on interdisciplinary research.

Previous experience in adaptive optics, confocal microscopes, multiphoton fluorescence microscopy and super resolution techniques would be an asset.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD in physics, engineering or a related discipline, who are strongly motivated and creative and willing to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment.
